Permits & code

Garage conversions require permits for the change of use, insulation/energy (Title 24), electrical, egress, and — for ADUs — the state's ministerial ADU review. We handle all of it.

For ADU conversions, California law has eliminated many parking-replacement requirements. For a simple room conversion, rules vary by city — we confirm what applies before you commit.

Can a converted garage be a legal bedroom?

Yes — with proper egress, insulation, heating, and permits, a garage conversion becomes legal, habitable space. Doing it permitted protects your home's value and avoids problems at resale.

Is a garage conversion cheaper than a detached ADU?
